Hip replacement surgery is a fantastic innovation that allows those that are limited by their hips to move again and to move freely. While most people encourage exercise and effort, there are some exercises that should be avoided after you have had hip surgery, even after you are fully healed.

There are plenty of exercises that it is recommended that you avoid after hip surgery. Most are those that make you move very quickly or that have you moving a great deal or for a long period of time. Exercises like running or jogging are not recommended as they can cause the hip replacement to dislodge, the wound to open back up, or the area to become inflamed, which can cause a great deal of damage to your surgery site.

You should also avoid contact sports where you may be jostled or hit, tennis where you are jumping and running back and forth, and any sport that involves jumping. This means you should avoid things like trampolines, jumping rope, skipping or jumping on and off of things. This can cause major damage to your operation site and can cause you to have intense pain and lasting negative effects.

You should also avoid bending your hip further than 90 degrees, crossing your legs or any other type of strain that may cause you pain or that might put too much stress on the hip or on your surgery site.

Safe Exercises for Hip Replacements

One of the best and safest forms of exercise that you can do after hip replacement is walking. This does not mean intense hiking in the mountains, but rather, a slow and leisurely walk. This helps to build up the muscle around your hip replacement slowly and gently instead of being too overly excessive and being too strenuous on your hip.

You can also do some light stretching and you can lift small weights. You should always ask your doctor what they recommend and what is safe for you after you have had any major surgery. This is going to help you figure out what sort of exercises are best and what is going to be safest for you in terms of what you can do after you have had major surgery and what is going to work best in terms of building up the muscles and keeping you safe from injury.
